Reading: There will be a quiz tomorrow. Here is what was discussed:

  1. The "universal obsession" in the story was being able to capture the Wonder Horse.
  2. The boy first sees the Wonder Horse in the summer.
  3. The boy feels like an "executioner" before capturing the Wonder horse because he feels like he killed the horses's spirit.
  4. The boy hurts for the horse when he takes him through the town because the horse is suffering and humiliated.
  5. The boy doesn't catch the Wonder Horse again because he is actually happy that the horse escaped and now has his freedom. He can remain a legend in everyone's mind.
  6. A Mandate is a formal order, a command.
  7. To recoil means to shrink back in fear. If a big dog suddenly starts barking at you, you might recoil.
  8. An indignity is being embarrassed or angry because you are being accused unfairly or feel you are being wronged by someone.
  9. An indomitable person is very strong in will, personality, leadership...
  10. To keep vigil means to stay awake and keep watch. A parent might keep vigil if their child is out late and he/she is worried about their kid.

Essay questions:

Why does the boy call the Wonder Horse "Mago"? The boy calls the horse Mago because it means "magician" or "wizard". Many people believe that the horse is magical because he has not been captured before. It says that he dissolves into mist."

What makes the Wonder Horse indomitable? The Wonder Horse is indomitable because he did everything that he could to escape. He wanted his freedom so much that he was willing to hurt himself, even if it meant pain or danger. He broke through the barbed wire, so his desire showed his strong will.
